Yowei Chang was born in Taiwan. He grew up surrounded by nature, sheltered from the chaos of modern life. A significant part of his inspiration comes from these early experiences.
At the age of 15, he moved to one of Taiwan’s major cities. It was his first immersion into the modern world of concrete, technology, and humanity:
“Everything the city had to offer pushed me to delve as deeply as possible into my inner self.”
Most of the subjects he explores come from nature itself. The forms, colors, and dynamics of nature were etched into his soul before he was even aware of it. It is easy for him to immerse himself in nature and reconcile it with his own humanity. He focuses primarily on the contours and shapes of the subject, including its symbolism, emotions, and impressions.
Yowei Chang does not confine himself to a single medium, form, or method of presentation; any material can help him express his ideas. His work emphasizes the various textures and forms produced by the combination of media, creating a contrast born of two realities: the object as it is, and the self as it is naturally nurtured.
